CANADIAN GRAIN ELEVATOR DISCOVERY CENTREbetter known as"SAVE ONE"The above Society formed when the Community of Nanton realized the last three grain elevators were slated for demolition in the Spring of 2001.The cry from the community was, we must save one, hence the unofficial well-known name for the Society is "Save One". It took three years and many volunteer hours from concerned citizens of Nanton to not just save one, but to save all of the elevators. The Society has full title to the land and buildings. The current Board and Community are grateful to the volunteers along with donations from Members and "Friends of the Elevators" who kept focused for three years on their objective to keep the elevators standing.Since 2004 donations have allowed the Society to move forward with repairs to the inside and painting of the orange elevator. The green elevator, as well as the coal shed, were painted as well. The Society has had the orange elevator open for tours on a limited basis as well as by appointment through our web-site.This is a brief overview of the beginning of the "Save One". The Society is moving forward with a business plan and ideas for the next three to five years as well as beyond. This is an exciting project to be participating in and the Society welcomes anyone wishing to be a part of a world class unique venue for the education and preservation of our agricultural roots. For further information please contact:Rick Everett, Chair - 403 - 646-5736. |
